A "fietstrommel" is the Dutch word for a "bike drum" or secure multi-bike parking structure. They were invented to solve multiple problems that many people experience regarding where to store one's bike when it's not needed. Problems like:
1. If you store your bike outside locked to a rack, it could get vandalized or stolen.
2. If you live in an older multi-family building that doesn’t have an elevator, it can be a hassle to carry your bike downstairs to the street, and then back up when returning home -- especially if you've travelled with your family or bought anything.
3. If you live in a home that’s too small to store a bike(s).
4. If you feel uncomfortable or vulnerable when accessing your bike in a common bike room that’s dark or isn’t accessed often.

So Bike Barns' supplier, Fietshangar, designed a fietstrommel to overcome these issues so people could store their bike outside and didn't need to worry about it. The burglary-resistant design includes a lock in which only subscribers have access, sides composed of strong expanded metal with solid steel bar reinforcement, a powder-coated corrugated metal roof with gas springs for easy opening and closing, and bike racks inside so subscribers also may use their bike lock for additional security.

While bike-friendly cities in the Netherlands, like Rotterdam and Utrecht, have used fietstrommels for decades, the concept is spreading throughout Europe and includes Dublin, London, and Paris, where the municipalities want to encourage bike use and decrease bike theft. These cities have created networks of tens or hundreds of fietstrommels and rent the parking spaces within the units to the public for a small fee. Fietstrommels can be installed on the street or sidewalk -- even right outside one's front door, so it's conveniently located for the people who use it. Additionally, fietstrommels can be available right outside one's back door too, as homeowners have purchased units for their backyard.
